Best New Mixes from October 2019
The mixes we enjoyed the most in our HQ during the month of October are here! We covered wider spectrum of electronic music, from ambient to house to techno to breaks and drum & bass, from radio shows to live recordings and podcasts. Bon voyage!
Carsten Jost - Phonons Podcast 064
Dial Records co-founder, Carsten Jost pleasantly surprised us with two mixes last month, so we were torn which one to pick. Our pick is the mix Carsten made for Phonons podcast series. The mix represents Carsten’s style at its best. Deep, dark and in moments melancholic, just like most of Dial records catalog, which shaped my taste in electronic music significantly for 20 years since they started. I would recommend listening to this on your headphones without distractions. Thom Yorke as an ending track, it doesn’t get much better than that.
Ateq - Things Happen After Birth
Bassiani’s 60th podcast comes from Giegling crew member, Ateq. It’s Ateq’s return to this podcast series which also hosted Konstantin and Vril from the Giegling crew in the past. The mix is proper after-hours material, it’s dark, deep with a touch of melancholy. If some of your friends have a basement, raid it, fill it up with haze and play this mix loud 😉.
Cleveland - Dekmantel Podcast 252
After releases on labels like Hivern Discs, ESP Institute, and White, Cleveland is in the spotlight yet again with this mind-bending mix which he made for Dekmantel. It’s cool to see that this incredibly talented producer and DJ gets the recognition that he surely deserves. The mix is quite moody, something that whoever listened to Cleveland playing in the club can say, it’s his style. There’s not much space to talk about genres because Cleveland blends house, techno, acid, minimal, tribal and everything in between flawlessly. It’s all about the mood…and the groove.
Donato Dozzy - TPF 006
This mix hits straight into the heart for me. I’m a big a fan of downtempo electronic music - house, techno, breaks…doesn't really matter, but that sweet ‘around 100 bpm’ spot is a deal maker. The mix was recorded at the infamous The Pickle Factory in London and behind the decks was no other but a living legend and producer whose work inspired the whole generation of young incredibly talented artists, Donato Dozzy. A perfect warm-up set, perhaps?
Arkajo - Patterns Of Perception
The master of the groove is back. Aniara’s own Arkajo made this exclusive mix for one of my favorite podcast series lately, Patterns of Perception. Even though it’s an hour-long mix, Arkajo doesn't rush in any moment of the mix and takes a listener to different dimensions of multi-layered rhythms and trippy melodies. An ambient opener with a cool edit of Gong’s ‘Magdalene’ catches the listener’s attention instantly. The usual suspects of deep, hypnotic techno are here - Dorisburg, Birds ov Paradise, Valentino Mora…and, of course, the man himself, Arkajo with one of the tracks from his upcoming Aniara release. This is one of my favorite mixes in the last few months.
Lux - Nachdigital Mint
This year the international underground music scene and specifically the scene in Leipzig said goodbye to one of the best festivals in the world. After 20 years, this was the last edition of Nachtdigital. And it was one to remember! Having Manamana, Job Jobse, DVS1, Lux, Janosch, Powder on the bill means quality fun music! For everyone who hasn’t been able to attend it, Nachtigital has started posting recordings from this years’ festival. First of many mixes that were posted (we hope) comes from incredibly talented Lux. Leipzig based DJ delivered this super cool mix in her recognizable style that seamlessly blends techno, house, breakbeat, and drum & bass.
Eric Cloutier - Groove Podcast 224
Detroit via NYC via Berlin, Eric Cloutier’s journey in the last couple of years has been nothing but impressive. After years of playing as The Bunker resident, Eric decided to move to Berlin where he’s been having his monthly residency at Paloma, but he also regularly plays at places like Berghain/Panorama Bar, ://About Blank, etc. Eric successfully runs his own imprint Palinoia which is home to releases by Orbe, Exercise One, the label boss himself. The mix Eric made for popular German magazine Groove is an essential homage to Eric’s style, deep trippy techno that fits perfectly for some late-night hours. A few words from Eric about the mix: To be honest, a one-hour anything for me as a DJ is infuriating, which is why I almost always turn down festival gigs, so that was an intimidatingly short amount of time to fit what I wanted to do in to. However I decided to flip the concept on its head and challenge myself to play, in 60min, what I would normally do if I was given an all-night set somewhere – condense opening, peak, and close in that short amount of time, yet still keep it an engaging set that doesn’t seem jarring or too cut-up and incoherent.
Kia - De School x Red Light Radio
Kia has become a usual suspect on Delayed’s list for best mixes. During this year’s ADE, Kia paid a visit to the infamous Red Light Radio where she played for De School’s radio show. Kia’s talent is being recognized more and more lately; and if she managed to get recognized by the Dutch scene all the way in Melbourne, then something is quite good here. Her talent for mixing complex rhythms while keeping the vibe throughout the mix is evident and proves that Kia is certainly one to keep an eye on. After-hour delight. Get your trip on!
Valentino Mora - MNMT events
You don’t get to listen to this type of mix every day. This 4hr long recording of Valentino Mora playing Blå in Oslo is pure enjoyment for everyone who is into deep, percussive and hypnotic electronic music. People’s attention span is getting shorter and shorter nowadays, and for some of them listening to the mix for 4hrs is a mission impossible, but I assure you this is 4hrs well spent.
Tracey - System108 Podcast 035
Tracey’s ‘Biostar’ LP has got a new facelift a few days ago with remixes from Lawrence, Darling, Jordan GCZ, Sterac Electronics, and Steve Rachmad. Since ‘Biostar’ came out Tracey’s got proper and well-deserved recognition from fellow artists, press, and fans. Tracey’s XLR8R mix a few months ago was cool, and this one is a perfect continuation of a similar vibe. The mix was recorded at GATE III festival this summer. The mix goes from techno to electro to breaks and back. Very energetic one.
Aurora Halal - BBC Radio 6 Mix
In the last couple of years, Aurora Halal has become one of the leading DJs at vibrant Brooklyn’s scene, and not just that, Aurora is also one of the masterminds behind the super cool festival ‘Sustain-Release’ which takes place upstate NY every September. Even though this extract of the mix that Aurora played at BBC Radio is only 30 min long, it’s long enough to highlight Aurora’s talent for setting the proper vibe. Deep trippy techno with a touch of breaks.
Baikal - Sound Of Berlin Flux FM
The big man is back! After a few years hiatus, Maeve co-founder, Baikal released an EP which reminded us just how much we missed his productions. 'Hear me’ EP was one of the most played releases on this year’s ADE and I’m sure it’ll be doing damage to dance floors in upcoming months across the globe. The mix that Baikal made in the light of his latest release is all we like about this incredible Dutchman. It’s groovy, it seamlessly blends house and techno and it’s so dancefloor-ready. A few words about the mix from the man himself: I'm happy with this one, good representation of where I reside at the moment. from the deeper shades of house to techno and in between, with some 2019 favorites, the new awesome quarion and some new music of myself in there.
Roman Flügel - Rinse FM October 11th 2019
Our prayers were heard! Roman Flügel’s residency on Rinse FM has been extended! October’s episode brings us new favorites from Mr.Flugel such as new Ponty Mython, Lost Scripts, Kornel Kovacs, Jimi Tenor and also a new remix by the master himself which he did for Sophia Saze. Essential listening!
Powder - RA 700
Jubilee 700th episode of RA podcast comes from one of our favorite DJs lately, Powder. The Japanese artist has built the reputation of a DJ who doesn’t make compromises and is very skillful in changing moods and grooves during her sets. A few words about the mix form Powder: I try to put together all kinds of grooves I learn or experience during my tour. First I translate those grooves to make sense for myself, and then I try to play it out with some adjustments to fit each environment. I try to feel the transitions of songs or tracks getting mixed over and over to a point it gets watered down, losing its original meaning. Once I could do this right, I try to go to the next step, and I just repeat doing this. It was a partial recording from a set I have played at a local club during my tour. I played all night, nine hours. This was around 4 AM till 6 AM during that set.
Ben UFO - live at Sorted, Denver
The latest episode of Hessle Audio radio show brings us a live recording of Ben UFO’s set in Denver which he played a few weeks ago. The wicked ride from Hessle Audio head honcho, with tracks by Overmono, Forest Drive West, Matthew Herbert, and Monolake just to name a few.
Steve Duncan - Nous’klaer Radio #22
Two of our favorite podcasts collided. Steve Duncan, a mastermind behind Patterns of Perception series made this mind-bending mix for Nous’klaer Radio. Just like we got used to listening to it in his curations for Patterns series, Steve’s style is leaning towards deep and trippy sides of techno. One would say that we really dig this style, 🙂 .
Tora Vinter - NLS 009
The latest installment of Northern Light Series comes from BROR records affiliate, Tora Vinter whose track we premiered here at Delayed a few months ago. Tora’s mix is a beautiful house escape, with warm and dreamy feeling all over it. This is a great daytime listening.
Seb Wildblood - XLR8R Podcast 615
Church records head honcho, Seb Wildblood mixed the latest edition of XLR8R podcast. Seb’s talent to seamlessly blend different genres of electronic music comes to light in this mix. Very enjoyable for listening with a feel-good vibe, this mix will take you for quite a ride, from deep house to breakbeat to drum & bass and back. Buckle up!
Ultrastation - Drift Podcast 045
The project by Nuno Dos Santos and Cosmic Force, Ultrastation is back with yet another energetic mix. The mix is a real peak time banger. Seamlessly blending techno and electro the duo doesn’t slow down until the 50th minute when mesmerizing Vivian Koch’s - Pa brings in some melancholy and prepares a listener for the grand finale. This one is a great workout companion.
Analogue Attic - Label Of The Month
Melbourne’s Analogue Attic has been on Delayed's radar for quite some time, and it’s cool to see that Albrecht La’Brooy's label is getting more and more recognition. A few weeks ago popular platform RA featured Analogue Attic as the label of the month. The mix that accompanied the story about the label is a marvelous ambient / chill out voyage that goes great paired with a morning coffee.
