ARTIST OF THE MOMENT: Molly
There was something in the air that ADE Sunday in October when Molly played her first public live set. Reminiscing ourselves holding our breath, eyes closed and hearts wide open immersing in these deep, otherworldly melodies. All of that glazed into the extraordinary Giegling light and stage design. If only, “Si Seulement”, we could go back to these moments that seem now like faraway fairytales. Her light is shining brighter than ever. After her long-awaited Giegling EP “Waves” in 2019, she now followed with the track “Conspiracy” as part of birthday compilation on absolute darling label DIAL. Very soon she will be releasing two new tracks on AEX under her real name Emeline. There is much more behind the Barcelona-based artist - who is running her own label Recit de Voyage including a residency at Club “extraordinaire” REX in Paris. As a DJ, there is an ease and sophistication around her that effortlessly blends disco, house, techno into each other, a soundtrack to get lost to (like in her recent podcast for Ransom Note). Molly, our Artist of the Moment, standing for this category in its truest sense: moments that last and halt the time, just like that Sunday afternoon in Amsterdam.
We’d love to hear from you about how you are doing in the current situation? Where and how are you spending the quarantine?
Hello! I’m doing pretty well, I must say. We definitely live in a very challenging time and for the past three months I have gone through different feelings, some ups and downs for sure, wondering how our future will be, but also finally using this time for doing things I always wanted to do: Taking the time to rest, to re-focus on me, working on some new projects, of course making some music and exploring different genres, eating and sleeping well, etc… I live between Barcelona and Corsica so I left for Corsica at the beginning of the lockdown, to get closer to nature. Despite the restrictions, I could still go out, enjoy the good weather and the calm.
In the sudden absence of any events, what role did music play for you? Social Media was crowded with streams and people heavily producing or learning to play an instrument.
I especially focused on production and tried to use my emotions for making music. It was pretty dark at the beginning I have to say :), so I worked on some “techno” tunes -and made a new techno project ;)
Then I went back to some more summery, deep, and happy vibes stuff. It was very interesting!
Of course, I had some days where the inspiration was not here, so I used this time for doing other stuff :) I did not do any “streams” … It’s not something where I would feel comfortable. Doing a “club” set in front of nobody is not really my thing… To be honest, I also stepped away a bit from social media :)
How would you describe your oeuvre as a DJ & as a producer from the beginning until now? Can you identify certain phases for yourself?
Good question! I never had a “career plan”, and I still don’t have :) I did not even plan to live my passion - music - as a job. I would say that I always “go with the flow” and do how I feel things… I started of course as a DJ, collecting vinyls and got into production quite late. I had to quit my job to be able to take the time to focus on production. It’s something that takes time. You must become a little bit of ‘geek’ I have to say and I thought I was not capable of doing it… I was very lazy at the beginning but the more I did it, the more I loved it… I am definitely more focused on the production now and my live set project. It’s something I really want to develop and explore deeper… If I really have to describe my oeuvre or what I do, I would say that I am a DJ AND a Producer. It’s two different states of mind, but I love both.
Tell us a bit about RDV ( Recit de Voyage), the label you are running and the events you were hosting at REX CLUB Paris and where do you see that going in the future?
RDV (Recit De Voyage) is the imprint I have created three years ago… I had the idea in mind for a long time - having my own platform where I could release the music I want, from the people I want to support. We just had the 6th release out, from Orion, a very talented Italian duo. I don’t rush myself with the releases, only releasing when I have the music I feel :). And then there are also the RDV events at the REX. It’s my residency at this legendary club. I invite artists I feel close to, musically but also personally and I use this night to showcase some artists of the label. For now, to be honest, I have not thought about any proper plans for the future, I like to let things go with the flow and I prefer to take the opportunities when they come to me… I already had the chance to do some RDV events abroad, so maybe when we will come back to “normal”, if we do one day, I‘ll try to export a bit more the showcases... let’s see :)
You mostly DJ alone, but over the last months, you started to play a few more b2b and also live sets. Can you share with us how you specifically prepare for these different setups?
Well, right :) I like to do b2b and share the decks ...But you cannot do it with everybody. Recently I had the chance to “musically” but also in terms of personality connect with some people. I can name a few like ATEQ, Levon Vincent, and also tINI… We don’t prepare anything, it’s spontaneous, that’s how the connection works :) and this is what I love!!! The live set is another thing. You set your mind for a different exercise. I always had it in a part of my brain, but did not feel confident enough to do…Giegling crew really pushed me into this direction and I have decided to jump into it :) I only did it two times. It’s a lot of work and preparation but it’s something I really love to do and I hope to make some more now :)
What is an interview question you really wanted to be asked but never were?
That would be the question: How and where would you like to see yourself in 20 years?
My dream retirement plan would be to live in a house, close to the sea, horses in the field, and growing vegetables. Training in the morning for apnea in the sea and spending the rest of the day in my little studio where I compose music for documentaries or movies. Making albums too … (lots of ambient I think :) ) And having a big piano in my living room, sipping a good red wine of course :)
Tell us about an artist you really want our audience to discover. What music are you inspired by yourself?
I would say those guys Orion, that I have signed on the label. They make such great music. There is also a Japanese artist I have discovered, with an old project “Mexico”, aka JunYamabe… You should check his music, it’s beautiful! I listen to mostly non-electronic music, lots of pop-rock, jazz, disco, soul-funk, hip-hop, and classical music. So I get inspired by that …
Who were the important people on your path that mentored or supported you?
There were definitely some artists who are important in my career, some of them have been supporting me from the beginning: Fred P, Levon Vincent, Radio Slave, Spencer Parker, Tobi Neumann, Giegling Crew, tINI, Butch, Ellen Allien. I also want to mention artists like Luciano & Loco Dice who really supported me in my beginnings and brought me to stages where I really could musically express myself.
For someone that never saw you playing, what would be the perfect description of your sound?
Wow … I don’t even know myself … it would say deep but groovy? Music with emotions, that makes dance but also travel…
We also would like to include a small playlist (a few mixes/ tracks of yours) that you would recommend as a good reflection of your work, for people to dive into and discover.
