REVIEW: Luigi Tozzi - Spiral EP [Non Series]
Mark Twain quipped famously, "History never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme." Or, more philosophically, events in history seem to follow a spiral path: always bending in a circular fashion towards a center but never on the same plane, creating this familiar yet fresh feel. If Luigi Tozzi did not explicitly refer to this phenomenon by naming his latest magnum opus "Spiral EP," he must have done it subconsciously.
The latest 5-tracker finds the maestro experimenting with a very different, stripped-down, sparse and reverb-heavy sound. As someone who has been following the techno spiral for quite some time, this reviewer feels that Luigi's sound is unmistakably bending toward the sonic palette of the legendary Sandwell District label, whose artists and sound ruled the early days and nights of Berghain. Yet Luigi makes his EP sound remarkably fresh and not at all anachronistic. Each track feels thoroughly modern and unmistakably Tozzi-eqsue, subtly evoking that legendary techno era rather than smacking the listener with a blatant homage. Luigi bends it towards the familiar but creates a work of art that stands on its own plane.
“Spiral EP” was released on February 24 via the Spanish record label Non Series.
